Maintaining Your Mental Health as a Teacher

Maintaining Your Mental Health as a Teacher Self-care is important, especially when you spend the majority of your day focused on the well-being of others. by Lisa Koplik Sometimes as a teacher, I feel as though I lead multiple lives. I have my teacher persona and then my everywhere else  persona, which can be exhausting and confusing,  especially if I accidentally carry one persona over to another part of my day! While living a double life  has its downsides, it's  also beneficial to be able to disconnect from work in your personal time. Work/life balance is hard to achieve, but not impossible. See the tips below in order to make the most out of your hectic life as a teacher and still feel fulfilled. 1. Exercise Doctors tell you, your crazy friend who does spin tells you, even you tell you: exercise! There are so many proven health benefits to exercise that you're throwing away if you don't get moving a few times a week. As a teacher, exercise has a special place in my heart. It is truly one of the only times during the week that I am actually able to forget about my students and focus on myself. It's healthy to let your students leave your mind from time to time, as they consume so much of our energy throughout the day (and sometimes nights!). If you find yourself making excuses such as,  I have kids,  I don't have time, or the gym is too expensive  find a YouTube video and work out in your living room! Your own body has so much more power than you think. Exercise is a great way to help yourself and your students by creating some mental distance from the classroom. 2. Make Time to Socialize You may feel that there is no way you can see your friends or family other than for absolutely mandatory obligations: a milestone birthday, a kid's birthday, a holiday party, and so on, but to limit yourself to only these kinds of high-energy social interactions will result in even more burnout. Plan one day per week (or two weeks, monthly, etc.) to see friends  and actually stick to it. Having something to look forward to and spending some downtime with close friends is essential to maintaining sanity. 3. Find Outside Professional Opportunities If you're like many teachers, you take on more than just your teaching job. Perhaps you work a few nights as a bartender, waitress, or sales associate. Perhaps you babysit, tutor, or work at a daycare on weekends. If you've decided to take on multiple jobs, more power to you. While working multiple jobs can add stress, it can also allow for a mental break from your  teacher persona.  I currently teach fourth grade while also working three shifts per week at a clothing store, and it's a complete change moving from one job to the next. I find that the extra money, adult interaction, and satisfaction of helping people helps me feel fulfilled, and it also helps me truly appreciate time off! If you're like me and enjoy filling your life with people and activities, multiple jobs may actually help you in more ways than just financially. 4. Think Before You Vent Again,  if you're like me, you tend to surround yourself with other teacher friends who understand what you're going through. I find that sometimes, venting with these friends can really help me work through any stress or issues I may be having at school, but sometimes, it's better to talk about anything else. When I constantly think about my students and discuss them at length, it can lead to more worry! For the sake of your mental health, it is best to enjoy the company of those around you without always bringing it back to the classroom. 5. Don't Shy Away From Therapy Unfortunately, going to therapy is not something that a lot of people feel comfortable discussing, but I'd like to work to change the dialogue that surrounds therapy. Therapy is not something people should be ashamed of, in fact, quite the opposite. You wouldn't feel embarrassed to tell a coworker about going to the emergency room for a broken arm. You wouldn't feel strange discussing antibiotics for a sinus infection. Why should mental health be any different? If therapy is something you're considering, I highly recommend: go. You won't regret it. 6. Go to Sleep! And finally, get some sleep. Enough said! (If you need a little help, there's always an app for that.)   How do you keep stress at bay? Strength and Courage in Admissions

Warning: This post will be a little more personal than most of my posts, but there is a lesson here for applicants. Please let me know by posting a comment, if occasional posts like this one are OK with you. It’s been an interesting few weeks. Starting with the day of the Boston Marathon a little over two weeks ago, I have seen and heard amazing stories of resilience and fortitude. And no, I was not in or even near Boston. As a city, it has demonstrated those qualities, and those injured in the bombing and grieving for lost loved ones will need even more strength in the weeks, months, and years to come. Coincidentally that night I went to see the movie, No Place on Earth. It is a documentary narrated by the people who lived it: six elderly Holocaust survivors who hid in a cave for over a year and a half. Actors act out the scenes. The elderly people, who have since lived seemingly normal lives, raised children, and enjoyed the privilege of seeing grandchildren and in some cases great–grandchildren, relate an amazing story of fortitude and resilience brilliantly presented in this outstanding movie. Then two weeks later, I traveled with my 83-year-old mother, herself a Holocaust survivor, and attended the 20th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Here we again heard stories of courage and heroism as the conference honored survivors, veterans who liberated Europe, and rescuers who saved the persecuted. We heard from Nobel laureate, Elie Wiesel, President Bill Clinton, aged veterans, survivors, and rescuers. Most of the honorees are in their 80’s and 90’s. Almost all were accompanied by their children and grandchildren. The younger generations’ attendance evidenced their elders’ resilience – their ability to move forward and rebuild their lives. Former Buchenwald prisoner, Elie Wiesel, represented the survivors and spoke movingly of how he and 400+ orphans freed from that hell on earth and sent to a children’s home in France after World War II, should have been emotional cripples. All 400+ became doctors, lawyers, teachers, tradespeople, rabbis, leaders, businesspeople, and writers. Despite the scars, they moved on. Despite the pain, they picked up the pieces of their lives. Refusing to be victims, they became survivors. Similarly the Stermer family from No Place on Earth emerged from their cave, literally dusted themselves off (layers of dirt), and began their lives anew. They moved to the U.S. and Canada, built businesses, and had families. They moved on. On some level the people of Boston demonstrated that same strength after their week of horror as they resumed their lives. From the depths of my heart I hope that none of you have been tested in the way that those whose lives were torn apart by World War II were tested, but I know that’s not true. Some of you have been persecuted. Some of you are vets. Some are heroes. Your ability to recover despite the pain or the scars defines the difference between a tragic victim and a resilient survivor. For the rest of you the lucky ones who haven’t endured the horrors of war or genocide, lived in a cave for a year and a half, or been under lock-down in a city in the grip of a murderous terror attack – you too can demonstrate that endurance. What does resilience mean for applicants leading blessed lives with more pedestrian challenges, frustrations, and aggravations and having to answer questions either in an essay or interview about failure, setbacks, or mistakes? It means showing through examples that you have the ability to come back, learn, and move forward. It means that after your leg, broken in a skiing accident, heals, you return to the slopes. It means that after your first â€Å"patient† dies, you continue with your plans to be a doctor. It means that after your start-up fails, you resolve to get an MBA so that you can successfully manage your next business. When asked about failures, setbacks, and mistakes, you just have to show that you have the strength and courage to deal with events within and beyond your control, to recover from disappointment and failure, and to pick yourself up, hopefully learn from the experience, and yes, move on. That’s resilience. The scope of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) covers implies the determination of the environmental consequences, or impact, of proposed projects or activities. In this context, impact means change- any change, positive or negative from a desirability standpoint. An environmental assessment is, therefore, a study of the probable changes in the various socioeconomic and biophysical characteristic of the environment which may result from a proposed or impending action. The project is referred to as the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Shah International Airportà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬? in Shah Alam. Henceforward, this new airport project will be known as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Projectà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬?. The planning and development of the new airport of Malaysia (Shah International Airport) at Selangor, Malaysia, began in ea rly 2009 when it became evident that the presented Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport (Subang International Airport) had limited expansion capability to meet the long-term increase in passenger and cargo demand. So for overcome this problem, the government therefore decided to build a new airport at an alternative site to accommodate not only the rapid increase in air transport, but also to meet the growing demand of the tourism and services sector. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Environmental Impact Assessment Report For Shah International Airport" essay for you Create order 2.0: DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT This Project will consist of the design, financing, construction, and operation of a new international airport. The Government of Malaysia has decided new project will be located on an around 1124 acres and the new airport will be designed to handle a maximum of 4.5 million of passengers annually. The project type : Public Owner of the new airport : Government of Malaysia Operator : Malaysia Airport (Shah Alam) sdn.bhd Location of the new airport : Shah Alam, Selangor, west Malaysia 2.1: Location and estimated cost of new airport Shah Alam is a city in Petaling and Klang Districts in Selangor, Malaysia, about 25 kilometres (15  mi) west of the countrys capital, Kuala Lumpur. In 1978, it replaced Kuala Lumpur as the capital city of the state of Selangor due to Kuala Lumpurs incorporation into a Federal Territory in 1974. Shah Alam was the first planned city in Malaysia after independence in 1957. The new International Airport is estimated to build at a cost of about RM8.5 billion or US$3.5 billion. 2.2 Activity Timetable The proposed schedule for performance of new airport is as follows: Start of Construction March 2011 Completion of Construction April 2011 Start of Testing and Commissioning May 2011 Completion of Testing and Commissioning August 2011 Start of Commercial Operation October 2011 3.0: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS 3.1: Positive impacts Based on particular project on new airport, potential impacts have been identified that are likely to result from the proposed new airport project. The positive impacts on this project are: Traffic congestion reduction Beneficial impact on economy Quick service and safety Less fuel consumption Better roads Employment opportunities 3.2: Negative impacts Secondly, based on particular project on new airport, the negative environmental impacts also are identified according to three main heading: firstly impacts due to project location, secondly impacts due to construction and lastly impacts due to project operation. 3.2.1: Impacts due to project location Relocation No relocation is required. The nearest residents live outside of the site about 2 km from the operational areas of the airport. Loss of trees A tree is a perennial woody plant and defined an important component of the natural resources because the trees can help to prevent the soil erosion problem and also producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. Due to the project, it is approximately more than 30 tree are likely to be loss. If average cost of a tree is RM500, it means the total cost of 30 trees is RM15000. Loss of historical and cultural monuments There is no loss of historical and cultural monument will be affected due to the new project. 3.2.2: Impacts due to projects construction soil erosion Soil erosion and sedimentation will probably be the most serious environmental effects arising from the project development. Soil erosion is the process of detachment and transportation of soil particles from its original mass by actions of raindrop impact and flowing water. Workers safety and health risk at construction site Worker safety will be protected by contractual undertakings to implement safe site practices. Because this is a new airport there are no hazards from operating aircraft. Sanitary practices in regard to providing clean water and the disposal of human waste will be enforced to safeguard worker health as part of the construction contract. Traffic diversion and risk to existing building During construction, minimum traffic diversions on roads will be required. At the grade and elevated section is mostly on barren land. In underground portion, the building line is considerably away from the proposed cut and cover and tunnels. Hence, no risk is foreseen to adjacent buildings. Impact on air quality Air pollution is the presence of one or more contaminants in the atmosphere in such quantities, characteristic and duration as to make them actually or potentially injurious to human, plant or animal life or to property, or which unreasonably interferes with the comfort, enjoyment of life and property. Air pollution can be caused by the presence of one or more contaminants. Examples of traditional contaminants include sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, ozone, oxidants, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, smoke and haze. There is a lower air quality on an around the construction site due to the absence of industry and the relatively low level of vehicular traffic on the north-south highway. Gaseous emissions from aircraft will not significantly alter this. The operation of the new project will not result in an increase in highway or air traffic sufficient to have any significant impact on air quality. Disposal of soil during construction Soil collection should be move out with the containers from the dredging sites/ places. The use of containers for move the soil from construction site to avoid that the soil not spill during movement to disposal site. The excavated soil will be first collected at dumping ground and then transferred to disposal sites. Dumping areas are essential to store the excavated earth temporarily for back filling at later date and final disposal. It is desirable to first clean the disposal area site of vegetation biomass that exists over it. The surface of these sites needs to be treated so that leached water does not contaminate soil and ground water. The faces and top should be treated/ vegetated to avoid erosion. Impacts on water quality Wastes generate during the construction phase, especially oil and grease from machinery, can cause pollution in the streams. The pollution of the river cause resulting from the development of the project is also of concern. During the construction phase, the pollution will mostly be in the form of high sediment loads if no mitigation sedimentation is taken. The escape of sanitary wastes, and pollution of the surface water and groundwater systems, would occur unless the wastewater generated by the operation of the airport, particularly from the terminal area, is treated. This will be mitigated by the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and sewage distribution lines as part of the Project. The sewage treatment process is recommended for new airport construction. Clean water for airport operations will be provided from a drilled well, or wells, with treatment to meet World Health Organization standards as part of the project. 3.2.3: Impacts due to project operation Oil pollution In view of the hazards potential involved due to failure of system and accident the onsite and offsite emergency measures have been formulated and will be implemented. Noise Noise defined as unwanted sound implies that is as an adverse effect on human beings and their environment, including land, structures, and domestic animals. Noise can also disturb natural wildlife and ecological systems. The main sources of noise from the operation of trains include: engine noise, cooling fan noise, wheel rail interaction, electric generator and miscellaneous noises like passengerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s chatting. Maybe during the construction, the noise levels of using the machines have to decrease. The effects of aircraft noise and vibration will be lower in the residential areas closest to the site. Water supply Public Health facilities like water supply, sanitation and toilets are classifies as important and needed at the construction site. CPHEEO has recommended 45 liters per day, water supply to persons working at construction site. The people working on construction site will be approximately over than 200. The water demands on construction site will be for personal use of workers or staff, fire demands and wastage. Removal of refuse The refuse from construction site includes; garbage, rubbish, and floor sweepings. The collection and removal of refuse in a sanitary approach from the construction site is of importance for effective vector control, visual improvement, and nuisance and pollution abatement. So, the removal or collection of the refuse should be mannerly plan to maintain the cleanness of the airport and to attract the tourists. Visual perception The construction of the above corridor will bring about a change in visual look of the streets through which it will operate. An architecturally well designed structure, which could be aesthetically pleasing and able to reduce impact due to visual disfiguration have been incorporated in present corridor. Since a low profile would cause least intrusion, the basic elevated section should be optimized at the design stage itself. Tourism impact According to the new project, there is no tourism impact. 4.0: CHECKLIST OF IMPACTS TABLE 1: Checklist of Impacts Parameter Negative Impact Positive Impact No Impact a) Positive Impact x i) Traffic congestion reduction x ii) Quick service and safety x iii) Less fuel consumption x iv) Reduction in air pollution x v) Better roads x vi) Employment Opportunity x v) Beneficial Impact on Economy x b) Impacts due to project location i) Relocation       x ii) Loss of trees x iii) Loss of historical and cultural moments x c) Impacts due to project construction i) soil erosion x ii) workers safety and health risk at construction site x iii) Traffic diversion and risk to existing building x iv) Impact on air quality x vi) Impact on water quality x d) Impacts due to project operation x i) Oil Pollution x ii) Noise x iii) Water supply x iv) Removal of refuse x v) Visual impact x vi) Tourism impact x 5.0: COST- BENEFIT ANALYSIS Cost benefit analysis is often used in the evaluation of viable alternative project options and thus provides a useful tool for decision-making. When environmental consideration is included, it becomes and environmental cost benefit. 5.1: Internal rate of return The economic internal rate of return for the new airport project was estimated at 25 percent because of the large initial investment required in the airside portion of the Project, the Project as a whole has been estimated to have a financial internal rate of return of 25 percent based on an increase in airport rates and charges that occurred after the end of conclusion of the TA study. 5.2: Economic benefit The main economic analysis benefits from new proposed project are: Incremental of net visitor expenditures The value of predetermined passenger and cargo traffic Time saving of passengers Direct or indirect generation additional 5.3: Project cost Project costs include civil works, other construction, equipment and its installation, and consulting engineering design and supervision. These project costs also include the cost of justifying all negative environmental impacts during construction and into the operating phase, approximately which amounts to $400,000, or about 0.5 percent of the total project base cost. 6.0: CONCLUSION The proposed of the new Shah International Airport (SIA) development will have no significantly adverse impacts on the surrounding environment. The construction, while involving soil improvement and considerable earthwork will, use proven construction techniques and conventional earthwork methods. Potentially minor adverse impacts can readily be avoided by good site management and construction practices, particularly related to drainage system design. A simple monitoring program is needed to cover the construction phase and the first three years of operation. This will be prepared during the design phase of the Project by the engineering consultants. It will then be implemented during Project construction by the Project administration assisted by the engineering consultants, and by the staff operating the airport (Airport Authority) during airport operation. The monitoring program will be supervised by the Directorate of Engineering.

The Film Industry Of Crisis By Frank O Hara - 1759 Words

Introduction A a result of my keen interest in my Media Studies Course I have chosen to look for a poem that highlights the positive and negative viewpoints on different issues surrounding the film industry. The poem I have found, â€Å"The Film Industry In Crisis† by Frank O’Hara in 1957, comments on the choice audiences must make between â€Å"Glorious Silver Screen† or to the American LEgion or the Catholic church. O’Hara also makes a brief reference to â€Å"give credit where it’s due†, which has lead me to look further into the impacts of Illegal streaming of film. I also wonder about how the viewing experience has been affected by external factors throughout history and what the impacts of developing technology have been on the film industry as a whole. How have changes to technology, including legal streaming sites, influenced the consumption of films? The way films are being made has significantly affected the way films are consumed with the introduction of full colour viewing to the increase in resolution and frame rate of film as a result of digitalisation of film in the early 2000’s. Access to entertainment has also changed with audiences shifting from traditional cinema to smaller more readily accessible methods. Through the early 1900’s cinema ticket sales in the US remained steady, around 80-90 million sales annually (CyberCollege ©). After the introduction of television in 1929, ticket sales began dropping and by the time the 1950’s arrived ticket sales had dropped to

Wilfred Owen Glorification Of War Essay - 1375 Words

Indeed, these descriptions of war were downright ghastly, to say the least. Apparently, soldiers in Owen’s poem had unrealistic perceptions when they initially joined the British Army. Most likely they were gullible and joyfully sang to the popular WWI era musical tune â€Å"Over There† (Duffy), which glorified war. Yet, once in the thick of battle young soldiers must have realized â€Å"†¦the Lie†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (27) and the crassness of mass war propaganda that fooled them into believing that war was good. Many of the WWI propaganda posters showed British soldiers tall, happy, and ready to fight (Keitch). Yet, it was Owen’s intention to question the honesty of war propaganda messages based on his wartime experiences. He took it upon himself to†¦show more content†¦Owen goes on to write that, â€Å"Men marched asleep... Many had lost their boots† (5). This line further described sleep-deprived barefooted soldiers in which war propa ganda advertisements eluded to mention. A second detrimental consequence of promoting mass war propaganda misinformation is conditions of employment. At times, soldiers in combat must report for work, sleep-deprived and with or without their equipment. These situations present a health hazard, which weakens the immune system to diseases and causes unnecessary injuries (Murray 287). Physical exhaustion also impairs soldiers from making sound life and death decisions. If military propaganda literature referenced the harsh working environment, the number of soldiers leaving military service would greatly surpass new recruits. Accordingly, this would eventually form a smaller inexperienced army unable to defend against ruthless foes. Owen continues with the lines, â€Å"But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; / Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots / Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind† (6-8). The word â€Å"shod† (6) means â€Å"wearing footgear.† During WWI, the soles of combat boots were reinforced with hobnails to increase their traction on the boggy wet ground. Soldiers’ boots would literally get stuck in knee-deep water soaked dirt causing them to remain buried as soldiers continued walkingShow MoreRelatedWilfred Owen Essay836 Words   |  4 PagesEnglish Essay Wilfred Owen, through his poems, shows the harsh reality of human conflict and contrasts the portrayal of these conflicts with the reality. Although Esperanza knew they were not moving anytime soon, she recognized one advantage; her family was free of landlord management. I learn the value of home ownership in a similar sequence as Esperanza. My little sister and I were moved to and from apartment to family member’s houses until our first small home. A home with no back yard and only four stairs and side walk out front. None the less, a home to call our own; it was then that I knew one day I will own my home painted â€Å"white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. † Setting this goal meant one thing to me, out; out of Philadelphia like out of the House on Mango Street. How to get out and leave my home, my Philadelphia that is so much a part of my maturing process that has molded who I am today is the challenge. Poverty is the drive behind my force on getting out, like Esperanza, poverty is a constant scene that drives my motivation to rise out from my community in Philadelphia. For many families it is not unusual to live in a row home next to an abandoned home or open lot where houses use to be; look around and see no grass only concrete, see no trees only stumps of where trees use to be and garbage carried by the wind collected alongside stoop of houses. The tricky part of growing up with this experience is realizing it molds character and influences a sense of direction. My experience in poverty directed my ambition in education therefore strengthening my chances in attaining my goals. Ultimately what was said to Esperanza by the three sisters, â€Å"You can’t erase what you know. You can’t forget who you are† is valid in the sense that no matter which path one is headed, their past is part of who they are, it is where they have been. Even though leaving Philadelphia is a dream of mine, I know there is no other place in the world I would rather be from; it has prepared me to be brave and define what I desire for my life and what is undesired for my life. Self-exploration is hindered in this book and my life. I can very much identify with Esperanza perspectives on societal issues that Latin women face. A society dominated by men and women relying on them, whether it is a father, spouse or friend. Men are considered the strong reasonable as where women are weak and emotional, in turn women need men for protection. A young girl may have two story paths, one where she relies on the protection of her father while she watches her mother cater to him or two, witnesses the struggles of a single young woman and absence for a father. This book describes marriage as priority for every girl or else how could she survive; appearances and physical features are highly valued traits. This attitude is not one that Esperanza agrees with, nor do I. For example, Marin she is the girl standing on the street just â€Å"waiting for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her life. This character implies that she does not dream of actively setting life goals for herself and working to earn them, instead she will wait until a man makes it happen for her. The ideology behind this thought being that as a woman she must thrive to be as attractive as possible to heighten her chances of marriage and acquire worthiness. First women are to become wives, then mothers this is to be success enough. The thought of a woman exploring her independence not only from her family but from men is not an appreciated ideal. Esperanza mentions many women that are prisoners in their marriages and trapped in their homes due to such bias. This is an important issue and should be addressed because reflecting on Esperanza’s perspective and my personal opinion; Latin women are not encouraged to explore independence much less through education. Sally is a great example that can express my reason for writing about this issue, her father sheltered her all her life and she married before eighth grade. Practicing those societal values leads Sally’s life to be encaged by her husband and home accompanied by nothing but the things she owns; this to which Esperanza understands that even though Sally has all the material things that her husband can buy, that is not worth much if there is nothing to do, no social interactions, or no self-respect. Esperanza absorbs her surroundings, contemplates her neighbor’s situations and visualizes her life and the thought of her life sadly gazing out of a window, this was all the motivation she needed to decide that she will not be end her story in the same manner; this I have done throughout my life as well. Being born and raised in the heart of Philadelphia I am consistently expose to the abundance of inequality, injustice and overall hardships that seem to walk hand in hand with this territory and culture of my community. Esperanza introduces Alicia, a girl that has a strong quality in common with Esperanza as well as I; the virtue of education. Alicia’s circumstances are very relatable to young Latin girls today in my life for example, I can recall positive reinforcement when I received good grades but there was rarely any encouragement to have me participate in extracurricular activities or educations competitions because there were chores. My family believed the transition would be easier if I did not move away for college and so I did not; I am encouraged to live home until marriage, therefore I have been. Things such as living on my own is addressed with the attitude of â€Å"why waste money, you minus well wait until you get married to move out,† but my education is my future; it is my gateway out of Philadelphia and into the path of my home with trees and grass to come home to after a day with my second grade students. With independence from my family and men is born a woman that can support herself and does not need to rely on a man. I am writing about the inequities regarding Latin women addressed in this novel as it is connected to my life. I like Esperanza, refuse to accept the limitations surrounding me like fog in the night discouraging me to pursue new paths. Most of the women characters Esperanza describe have strong personalities yet are unable to escape from their suppressing community and culture. I am neighbors with Mothers the age of fifth-teen and grandmothers the age of thirty-two. There are women that are raising their grand-children and mothers hoping to complete high school. Yet somehow this has become a norm it is not surprising to see a Latin woman have children at a young age as well as marriage. I personally never get tired of being asked: Do you have children? Are you married? You are in school? (in a very sarcastic tone); in that specific order. The expectations in this novel for young Latin girls are to find a man to support them and the way to find a man is through physically looking as attractive as she can and in order to become a loyal wife and mother. This is a society where a woman leaving their families to seek self-identification is not a natural thought. Esperanza was strong enough to fight through the society norm and pursue her talent and not become trapped in a house ruled by a man. Today I fight the same battle as do many Latin women do, we are strong and it takes bravery to go after one’s happiness in life. We strive to rise above poverty and community inequities through hard work and self-dedication to one’s ambitions. As The House on Mango Street is part of Esperanza, my Philadelphia community is part of me; without what I have seen I would be blind to what I want.
